A pangram is a sentence that uses all 26 letters of the Roman alphabet. Taking the concept of a pangram as a point of departure, this exhibition explores the language of Singaporeans, with 26 pangrams created using the Singlish vocabulary.

The exhibition illustrates how Singlish language is part of Singaporean culture, describing the fusion of Singapore’s different races, their influences and how that culminates in present culture. The artworks are characterised by elaborate tiny holes and perforations, with pangrams viewed using mini LEDs to filter light through these holes.

The exhibition aims to challenge viewers’ perceptions by confronting the nature of stereotypes, and seeing the symbiotic relationship between typography, the pangram, the artist and the viewer in a process of discovery.

Viewers will be invited to take a closer look at Singapore’s own brand of English by creating their own Singapore Pangram, be it through a perforated pangram or printed card. Besides a better understanding of pangrams, this also provides an opportunity to learn about typography design.
