Synopsis:
It explores themes such as the influence of Zen Buddhism on Japanese culture which led to the formation of Japan's unique culture. It also touches on how the traditional Japanese cultural which stems from how Zen has eaten its way into the depths of modern day Japanese lives and embracing the ideas on contemporary design, the miniaturisation of landscape, sculpture, and texture. Masuno's landscape designs invoke a simple, peaceful, Zen-like quality. Masuno believes that "the garden is a special spiritual place in which the mind dwells". The gardens he creates are thus special crystallisations that express the depth of his minds. As how Masuno has put it "You have to go straight to the heart of the matter and create something which will have a lasting impression on people. " As far as gardens are concerned, the influence is so remarkable that the word Zentei or "Zen Garden" is still used today. A Zen garden should be a work of austere beauty and profile simplicity. Masuno says spaces can be used to develop awareness, a Buddhist preoccupation, with one insight being that "a Japanese garden exists in two places, in the garden itself but also in the mind of the viewer." |
